Beau My Beautiful Little Mongrel
Beau came into my life when I was a young adult. I was not allowed a dog as a child and yet I spent my child hood dreaming that one day I would have a house full of dogs, I loved them so much. (My dream came true incidentally!)
Beau was a rescued black and tan little terrier type mongrel. I rescued her when she was just 8 weeks old, having been dumped at the side of the road in a box with her sisters and brothers when she was just 2 weeks old. The shelter said how lucky she had been as she was the only one to survive. From the day I brought her home I knew she was extra special, it was a few years later when I realized just how special.
Two little boys of five and six had ‘gone missing’ from the estate. Police were out, and what seemed like the whole of the community had come out in force to look for the youngsters. The search was mainly focused on the woods that covered quite a large area. It was November the 5th, and very cold. A group of us decided that we would head off in another direction, but Beau was whimpering and barking and would not let me take that particular route. She was definitely agitated so I made the decision to follow her.
Now in those days, (1985) there was no such thing as heat seeking equipment, so as Beau was leading me to a large open space, I was pretty confused. Slowly then it dawned on me, she was heading straight towards a bonfire that had been built in readiness to be lit for a firework display that was taking place that evening.
As I approached she was going frantic and scrabbling away at the base of the bonfire. Now this area had previously been searched, and the bonfire had been covered. However, we are talking kids here, and obviously concerned at the trouble they were going to be in from their parents, they remained well hidden and still!
Little Beau burrowed in, and the next thing I heard was giggling and the game was over. Now I am certain that the area would have been covered again but who knows? The consequence is not worth thinking about. All I do know is that my beautiful little mongrel had somehow known that there were kids in danger and she saved the day.
How special is this?
