The Dog Who Liked To Smoke
Now they say that children pick up bad habits from the adults in their life, but can the same be said about animals? Well you may think not, but this little tale just might get you to thinking.
Sheeba (who you will see many more stories about) is a lovely little cocker spaniel. Now she is a rare sort in that she just doesn't act like any normal dog. She is always up to something and although she has many good habits she has her own share of bad ones, and not just ones that you would expect from a dog that is a bit (well a lot) on the spoilt side.
Anyhow Sheeba lives the life of luxury being owned by a couple who have had her since they rescued her from a cage full of other dogs at a pet store. Feisty from day one is the best way to describe her.
Unfortunately her owners are smokers and Sheeba has had to put up with this as being part of the family. Like the usual smokers, ashtrays were left about as were packages of cigarettes.
It wasn't uncommon for an unlit full cigarette to be set in an ashtray if the owner happened to get distracted. One particular day Sheeba was enjoying the warm spring weather basking on the back porch. Here owners were coming and going about their business. All of a sudden Sheeba's owner noticed that Sheeba was standing quite still and seemed pre-occupied. This was an unusual stance for the dog and the owner was unable to see the dog's face as the dog had her butt towards the owners view.
Being a bit alarmed the owner called Sheeba by name and the dog nonchalantly turned her head to see what the owner wanted. Well! There was Sheeba with a unlit cigarette in her mouth in a perfectly normal fashion, with the filter end resting securely between her lips. It was almost as if she were asking, "Got a light"?
Now you can imagine the surprise, and horror of the dog owner. This really was funny but quite embarrassing as well. Knowing immediately there was an element of danger here should Sheeba ingest the nicotine the owner attempted to take the cigarette from her. However, Sheeba was not about to give it up that easily and proceeded to sit herself down still holding the cigarette with a very firm grip. After much coaxing and the tempting of treats Sheeba finally exchanged the cigarette for a goodie.
From that day on however Sheeba would actively seek out the ashtrays in search of a cigarette. Although the owners still smoke they take every precaution to keep the cigarettes and the ashtrays out of Sheeba's reach.
There are times when dogs are just simply playful and we love to see this in our canine friends. Then there are times where they have become aggressive and even in a small way this can lead to something more dangerous. If you are dealing with a dog that you suspect maybe showing signs of aggression or has adopted habits that you are not fond on then this may help
