A last act of love
Sheeba, has got to be the most fierce, obstinate, set in her ways cocker spaniel that was ever born. She was not what one would call pretty, and when it came to disposition she leaves much to be desired. There is something however that Sheeba possesses that makes her special.
Sheeba belongs to a couple that rescued her from a tiny little cage that was overcrowded with other canines much bigger than her, in a local pet store. Small though she may have been, she had no problems backing the other much larger dogs into a corner while she enjoyed her meals.
Her life at her new home was run pretty much the same way. As much as her new family would try to take the role of master, Sheeba was certainly queen of her castle, and had no problems setting the ground rules.
Sheeba on a daily basis enjoy the love lavished on her by her human Mom and Dad, and her human grandmother who was an elderly woman in her 80's that also lived at the house. Sheeba was simply adored by this senior, and in her eyes could do nothing wrong. Sheeba however, considered this senior, to be her pup and would literally control the woman. The vet said that Sheeba truly believed that this lady was her pup.
Time passed and the lady became quite frail and had to move onto a nursing home. Needless to say that both Sheeba and her human grandmother missed each other terribly. On occasion though Sheeba would get to see her human grandma on short weekend visits. During this time nobody else existed for the two of them.
On one occasion Sheeba's grandma came for a weekend visit, and Sheeba was totally thrilled of course.The night was spent with Sheeba lavishing all the petting and love that Grandma was doling out, and it continued into the next day. As they both lay stretched out on the couch there was no mistaking the love and bond between these two.
Then suddenly grandma took a deep breath and stopped breathing. Sheeba who was laying at her side quickly moved up close to grandma's mouth and started making a huffing noise. As Sheeba's human Mom moved quickly to see what was happening she saw that the dog was trying to blow air toward grandma. A few moments passed and people were trying to resuscitate grandma. Sadly, grandma came semi conscious, managed to put her arm across her beloved Sheeba and gently slipped away. Truly a sad day for all, but also a startling confirmation of just how much love these most magnificent canines are truly capable of.
