We have all heard the stories of pets and how every now and then they do something amazing. I would like to tell you one such true story of a beautiful English setter called Sam.
I remember Sam as a puppy. He was purchased for a very dear elderly gentleman called Jed. Many people had tried to dissuade Jed from getting another puppy as they feared he would not cope. Jed would not hear of such nonsense and being set in his ways, and a little stubborn, he went ahead and fetched Sam home.
Well, true to form, Sam was a hand-full and he gave Jed a hard time. He would run off, bark and chew everything he could get his mouth around. Jed’s daughters would very often try and talk him into finding a new home, as they believed Sam was just too strong and lively to cope with.
One day in the Autumn Jed and Sam were on their usual walk around the countryside and across the fields when Jed stumbled and fell backwards into the hedgerow! Because of the way he had landed Jed was unable to get up as his feet were higher than his body which was in the wet drainage channel at the bottom of the hedge. Being quite frail and also with his clothing snagged by the hedge Jed was truly stuck!
When it first happened Sam was some way ahead of Jed exploring the hedges and trees but on hearing his shout as he fell, Sam came bounding over to see his master, and unable to do anything else gave Jed a comforting lick on his face, this he kept doing every few minutes. By Jeds estimation he must have lain there in the cold for well over an hour when all of a sudden Sam sat bolt upright and barked, and barked, and barked until myself and a friend who were walking our own dogs around in the same area went to investigate.

Good old Sam knew that help was at hand, and showed us where Jed was laying helpless in the cold. It took just a couple of minutes to rescue Jed, brush him down and get him home to the warm, but if Sam had not told us where he was he might have been there till morning when the next round of dog walkers went out.
Needless to say Sam became a bit of a local hero and in Jeds daughters eyes he became a living legend, and he was lavished with doggie treats!
Sam was only doing what dogs do; he was being faithful and loyal to his master.
Sam has since passed on, and sadly Jed is too frail to have another pet, but he has beautiful memories and still walks around in an old pair of slippers that Sam had chewed
